If you are looking for New Comedy Movies DVD, this is a good one to catch. After “Something’s Gotta Give”, writer-director Nancy Meyers offers another beautifully shot, flawlessly crafted film that pays homage to the classy, classic romantic comedies of the 1940s.
Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet star as bright, talented women simultaneously suffering from man troubles. Iris (Kate Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda (Cameron Diaz) realizes the man she lives with has been unfaithful. Two women who have never met and live 6000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris' handsome brother Graham (Jude Law); Iris meets film composer Miles (Jack Black).
Things take their course, but those courses aren't always predictable. Happy endings are, perhaps, expected, but they arrive through circuitous and unforeseen routes. The main characters are intricately detailed with quirks, attitudes and mischief not unlike all the old classic comedies. Consequently, "Holiday" is a new-old movie, a unique blend of classics being re-imagined in contemporary terms.
At 131 minutes, this comedy runs a tad long, but the reward is deeper characterizations than most comedies enjoy. All the stars are funny, sexy, and unabashedly wear their emotions in plain view. Everyone is able to winningly play their quirky and ridiculous roles to perfection. |
