Casino Royale (PG-13)
Casino Royale was the first of Ian Fleming's books, and the 21st film in the franchise is based on this book. It takes us back to the time the young secret agent first started out. It is clearly one of the best Bond movies till date.
Starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007, Casino Royale is the story of his first assignment, which is to track down a terrorist cell in Madagascar. But he's a loose cannon, and things quickly go awry. Bond's superior M (Judi Dench) is soon regretting giving the arrogant Bond the promotion. Nonetheless, Agent 007 follows a lead to the Bahamas and discovers that all illegal activities point to Le Chiffre, (Mads Mikkelsen) who has money ties to terrorist organizations. The plot really gets going when Bond foils Le Chiffre's plan to blow up a plane. M also sends accountant Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) to keep Bond in check. Over time, it becomes apparent there is a growing attraction between them.
Casino Royale is the tale of a purer, simpler Bond. We start to understand that Bond is a young agent who has just been given the 00 status. He's still not used to killing. If you want your trademark Bond gadgets, cars, and gear, Royale will disappoint. Casino Royale is also rare in that it shows how Bond became the James Bond that we all know; driving the Aston-Martins and bedding all the beautiful women.
Casino Royale breathes new life into the James Bond franchise. It explores the fascinating early career of 007.
